GENDER ADVISOR in an NGO

Plan is an international humanitarian child centered community development organization, without religious, political or government affiliation. Plan started its operations in Kenya in 1982 and is committed to protecting and promoting child rights, and to improving the lives and futures of poor children, their families and communities through a child-centred community development approach.
Dimensions of Role
        Promotes gender equality as outlined in the Plan’s policy on Gender Equality: Building an equal world for all children;
        Builds greater gender awareness and enhanced commitment by management to equip Plan staff (Country and Program Unit levels) with skills and knowledge to facilitate gender –sensitive and rights based program development and practice;
        Facilitate Gender Capacity Building Programs (as part of the Global Gender Equality Capacity Building Program) for Plan staff and partners so as to ensure equality for girls and boys is realized through Plan’s programs:
        Participate in Plan Regional, Global and external gender network or platforms for sharing, learning and action planning;
        Develops a shared understanding across Plan of the linkages between gender equality, human rights and Plan’s Centered Community Development Approach to addressing child poverty;
        Ensures gender analysis becomes an inherent part of country strategic planning, as well as program design, implementation, M& E and institutional learning;
        Plans and support field level staff in the implementation of Plan policies, programs and projects that actively promote gender equality;
        Advises Extended Country Management Team on gender issues
        Participates in national stakeholder forums, consultative sessions, or conferences to profile Plan’s work and influence policies to ensure gender equality;
        Facilitates and participates in gender related research, documentation and advocacy at Program unit National, Regional and International levels;

Typical Responsibilities
        Develop innovative programs and processes of engagement that contribute to gender equality between girls and boys and women and men locally and institutionally;
        Facilitate gender training programs that enhance capacity of Plan staff and partners to acquire knowledge and for undertaking gender analysis and come up with programs for influence social change at family, community and institutional levels.
        Support staff to the design and localize gender analysis tools for effective engagement with children and communities;
        Follow-up monitor or asses programs from a gender perspective and see how they are impacting girls and boys and women and men;
        Develop a small annual budget to support gender activities of national significance and internal organizational learning;
        Support in the implementation Plan global gender policy and mainstreaming of gender in all country programs at national and Program Unit Level;
        Initiate organizational gender audits at Country office, PU level and encourage all new projects to undertake similar actions providing technical advice;
        Participate in national, regional and global gender related advocacy campaigns such as the ‘Because I am a Girl’
        Foster and build strategic partnerships and alliances for effective integration of gender in programs and influencing policies and practice;
        Provide technical support and oversight to Program Unit staff for design and implementation, monitoring and evaluation of gender related projects;
        Support grants team in the review of project reports before they are submitted to donors
        Identify best practices in gender programming and facilitate experiences sharing and learning between Program Units;
        Facilitate and participate in research and documentation best practices

Knowledge
        A degree in Law or Gender Studies and/or Social Sciences from a reputable institution;
        At least 5 years’ experience in gender and development from a reputable organization;
        Understanding of integrated development issues and critical analysis of child poverty from a gender perspective
        Knowledge of Gender and Development and evolution of Women and Development and feminist theories;
        Knowledge of development issues, trends, challenges and opportunities and implications to community development;
