Program description: This program is a collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It involves conducting research and program support for activities related to TB, malaria, HIV and other diseases. It is within this remit that the TB Branch wishes to recruit a Data Analyst who will be responsible for data management procedures of various studies within or collaborating with the branch.
Position: Data Analyst - 1 position (MR 9 or MR11 depending with person’s Qualifications)
Location: KEMRI/CDC Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR), Kisian, Kisumu.
Minimal qualification:
·         Bachelors degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Information /Computer sciences or equivalent from a recognized university
·         Masters degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Information /Computer sciences will be an added advantage
·         Minimum of 3 years experience in data management, or similar duties
·         Demonstrable skills in at least one statistical package for data manipulation, preferably STATA, SPSS, SAS or related software
·         Experience in cleaning data and performing quality assurance procedures
·         Should be able to program in Microsoft Visual Studio
·         Be familiar with SQL databases
Desirable qualities:
·         Knowledge of SAS programming for data manipulation/report writing
·         Experience with SQL-based programming and knowledge ASP.net or/and PHP programming
·         Ability to develop an in-depth understanding of study goals and its implementation;
·         Ability to manage and lead a staff;
·         Ability to supervise and work as a team, with good interpersonal skills;
·         Excellent knowledge of at least one statistical analysis package (SAS, STATA, SPSS) and experience in handling relational databases;
·         Experience in collating, sampling, computing, analysis and presentation of statistical data by applying statistical techniques such as logistic regression, Poisson regression, sample survey estimation procedures, nonparametric statistics, and general linear models;
·         Experience in managing/ensuring data quality
·         Experience or Ability to set up wireless networks
·         Ability to design/develop computer databases, and experience working with relational databases
·         Field experience with data collection preferred
·         Ability and willingness to learn additional skills on the job
·         Microsoft Visual Studio programming
·         High qualities of public relation and able to work with little or no supervision
Job Summary: Reporting to the TB data branch Manager and various PIs, the data managers will be responsible for all the data management procedures of the various studies within, or collaborating with, the TB branch. They will be expected to work on various database/studies and therefore should be able to prioritize tasks and meet set deadlines.

Specific tasks and responsibilities
1.  Design and manage databases and data entry procedures
2.  SAS programming for data manipulation/report writing
3.  Perform data cleaning
4.  Deal with routine problems arising in the course of data handling
5.  Participate in the design of study questionnaires and data entry instruments
6.  Develop standard operating procedures for all data management related procedures
7.  Supervise field and office based data management and data entry, verify data input and correct errors
8.  Train staff on data analysis and manipulation skills
9.  Provide timely reports and feedback to the study investigators regarding the status of data, detected deficiencies and corrective action needed in databases
10. Learn and perfect skills in Visual CE or VB.net programming for PDAs
11. Perform other duties as assigned by the branch management
Terms of Employment: Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months.  Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.

POSITION: Surveillance Coordinator - Dadaab (MR 9 or 10) Grading depend with Qualifications  
LOCATION: Dadaab Refugee Camps, North Eastern Province
Reports to: program Head

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
1.  Academic requirements
o    Degree in Medicine(MD, MBChB or equivalent) and registered with the Medical Board OR
o    Bachelor’s Degree in another health related field, AND with at least 3 years  experience in refugee health, disease surveillance, epidemiology
2.  Knowledge of communicable diseases & public health
3.  Experience with data collection and data collection tools
4.  Strong interpersonal & communication skills
5.  Proficiency in oral and written English language required, working knowledge of Somali language desired but not required
6.  Willingness to work in Dadaab refugee camp

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ÿ   Oversee the existing facility-based disease surveillance activities in Hagadera camp, Dadaab
Ÿ   Initiate expansion of disease surveillance to other sites in Dadaab and along the cross-border region
Ÿ   Oversee laboratory quality improvements
Ÿ   Manage all logistics associated with carrying out surveillance activities in the camp.
Ÿ   Supervise study team – including clinical, lab, and data staff.
Ÿ   Maintain complete and accurate records using developed data collection instruments; report back to staff in Nairobi
Ÿ   Provide technical support to UNHCR and partners as required.
Ÿ   Lead and participate in response to public health events of concern that occur in Dadaab and the region
Ÿ   Work closely with County and regional health authorities
Ÿ   Other duties as assigned.

Summary: 
OVERALL JOB PURPOSE: Since 2004, the HIV-project at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP)in Kilifi has been conducting research with vulnerable and key populations including pregnant women, discordant couples, male and female sex workers for HIV prevention, testing and referral and ART initiation. Community engagement is a key component of this research, as it is across the wider KWTRP programme: To contribute to on-going community engagement activities for the HIV project aimed at maintaining and strengthening relations and mutual understanding between the community and the KWTRP. To support, maintain and contribute to research activities related to community engagement for the HIV project, including proposal development, data/sample analysis and management, training, reporting and preparation of publications.
 BUDGET AND RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITY: Will take responsibility for moderate amounts of cash for petty cash payments (up to about 50, 000 kes) and maintain records of expenditure for community liaison activities (to support main accounts dept). S/he will also maintain responsibility for equipment used for community liaison activities, including video cameras, cameras and digital voice recorders. S/he will have a laptop computer for his/her own use.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Community engagement specific (60%)
  • Contribute as a team with other HIV project community facilitators and relevant members of the Community Liaison Group (CLG) to the development of an overall annual workplan, based on an overall plan agreed by a small planning group for community engagement (called the CAST group)
  • Assist with the implementation of agreed community engagement activities where relevant will draw on support from across the same teams.
  • Attend regular HIV community engagement meetings to discuss issues and agree ways forwards
  • Attend regular CLG meetings to feed in issues and ensure awareness of and input into programme wide community engagement activities
  • Document HIV project activities, questions, how handled and suggestions for change
  • Prepare and submit draft reports as required including activity reports, project progress reports etc.
  • And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
 Research specific (40%)
  • Carry out desktop research/ literature reviews and prepare/ draft write-ups as may be required for inclusion in/ to support proposals, presentations/seminars and publications.
  • Work with the Principal Investigators and other relevant staff to prepare research plans.
  • Participate in the execution of research projects including the setting up of studies, identifying resource requirements, documentation of protocols and training of the same, consenting and community engagement activities and initiating recruitment of study participants etc.
  • Participate in the collection, processing, compilation and analysis of study data and ensure all related records and reports are handled and managed in line with study protocols.
  • Liaise with relevant teams to ensure that all data is entered into relevant databases on time and carry out data verification activities as requested/required to ensure its accuracy, integrity and validity.
  • Carry out data analysis and interpretation and provide relevant information including statistics, summaries, charts, graphs, reports etc.
  • Participate in tracking use of project funds/ grants through the monitoring, review and preparation of field expense reports, tracking of study expenses etc.
  • Attend and contribute to scientific presentations and proposal development in the cluster and the wider programme (SSP, SSG, journal club, unit seminars and SCC)
  • Prepare and submit draft reports as required including activity reports, project progress reports etc.
  • And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
 QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A BSc or BA degree in Social Sciences, Public Health or health related subject
  2. Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications

  1. Experience in community based health research activities, particularly involving most at risk and other key vulnerable populations
